Born in Lakenheath (Mildenhall Q1-1897 4A:843)
1901 census...Aged 4, he was living at Sedge Fen, Lakenheath with his father- James PALMER [44] stockman; mother- Mary Ann (née COLEBY)[44]; brother- George H [18] farm labourer; brother- Peter [13] farm labourer; sister- Ruth [6] and sister Hagar [2]. All were born in Lakenheath. 1911 census...Aged 14, farm labourer living at Sedge Fen, Lakenheath with his parents, brother Peter ans sister Hagar. Of 11 children, 5 had died His father apparently died in 1917. |

Enlisted in Lakenheath. Without his Army records it is impossible to find where or when he was injured. Bailleul was an important hospital centre at the time with wounded brought in from a large area and Alfred died in No.53 Casualty Clearing Station there. He had been wounded in the arms and legs and then gangrene set in The Bury Free Press of 13th October 1917 reported:- LAKENHEATH FAMILY DOUBLY BEREAVED Much sympathy is felt for Mrs.James Palmer of Sedge Fen, Lakenheath in her second bereavement within a few weeks. An official notification has been received by her, informing her that Prvt Alfred Palmer, her youngest son, 10th Royal West Surrey Regiment died of wounds on September 21st, received in action in France. He was a well respected young man, and was 21 years of age. He joined the Army in the autumn of last year and had been home once on sick leave. |
